Recently, a couple of patients have asked about Silver Diamine Fluoride and I wanted to shed some light on this semi-new product.
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a FDA-approved colorless liquid that is able to arrest and prevent tooth decay in both children and adults. It has been available for use in multiple international countries (including Australia, Japan, and Germany) for decades and has now been approved for use in the United States.
It is a liquid compound applied in multiple coats to prevent cavities from spreading and increasing in size. SDF is cost-effective, fast, and non-invasive. Typically, it can be used on dental emergency patients, infants with severe rampant decay, and patients with behavioral/anxiety issues. One drawback is that SDF stains very easily and possibly permanently. However, it will NOT stain healthy tooth structure. Let us know if you think you or someone you know is a good candidate for SDF.
